I first discovered oil cleansing a little over a year ago and in 2015, the trend reached its peak.
For those of us who lived through the Clearasil days, we never would have considered using an oil-based product to cleanse our skin. Key words like “oil-free” and “non-drying” became engrained with the message, and we were misinformed.
Oil cleansing and your skin
The reality is that our skin naturally produces oils, yet we are so eager to eliminate these oils and cleanse with products ridden with harmful chemicals that suck the life out of our skin.
My very first oil cleansing experience was with all-natural coconut oil. I can remember it was a hot summer night 3 years ago, and I had gone all out on my evening look. Out of instinct, I reached into my pantry and poured a little into my hand and emulsified the product on my face before rinsing. I was amazed at how easily everything came off, and my skin was left feeling moisturized. From then onward, I was sold.
Oil removes dirt quite effectively, so it only makes sense to cleanse with a product that replicates what your body naturally produces. Bear in mind that different skin types call for different products, so we have created a guide to accommodate all skin types.
5 best oil cleansing products
The DIY: All-Natural Coconut Oil
Suitable for eye makeup remover and oily, acne-prone skin
Not tested on animals 🙂
Coconut oil is great for everything, so consider it your go-to for your skin and hair. Because it heats at a higher temperature than other oils, during the cooler months you will need to heat it up a bit before applying. Coconut oil is also a natural bacteria killer, which makes it ideal for those with acne prone skin. Consider mixing a few drops of tea tree oil (natures astringent), and rose hip oil which has a drying effect.
The Dermalogica: Precleanse Oil Cleanser
Suitable for all skin types
Not tested on animals 🙂
Precleanse by Dermalogica is a first step in your cleaning routine, this product does a great job at removing make-up prior to a thorough skin cleaning. The lemongrass fragrance will make your morning and evening ritual a calming, pleasant experience. I’d suggest following up with Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel after Precleanse to get the full Dermalogica effect. Full disclosure: I’m addicted to their products.
The Classic Way: Palmers Oil Face et. al
Suitable: mainly for normal to dry skin, but product claims all
Does NOT test on animals 🙂
Yes, you read right. Palmers, a classic brand favourite amongst folks of all ages, has released their own line of oil cleansing and moisturizing products.
Body Oil Rich yet light-weight mix of skin-nourishing non-fragrant oils.Excellent for all-over smoothing of dry skin, either used alone or applied over body lotion. All of the plant oils are natural sources of antioxidants. Inexpensive. Grapeseed, Jojoba and Rosehip Oil, Cocoa Butter and Vitamin C to deep clean and purify complexion for clearer, bright skin. This product is non-drying, non-stripping and ideal for all skin types. Since this product contains shea, it’s a suitable choice for normal to dry skin types.
Oil FACE cleanser deep cleans, brightens complexion and balances skins pH.
Palmers blend of key ingredients removes make-up & impurities, is non-stripping, non-drying, won’t clog pores and combines antioxidant-rich pure cleansing oils:
Skin Therapy Oil Contains Vitamin E and cocoa butter, so it can be used as a moisturizer under your makeup.
The products also contain Vitamin C, to deep clean and purify complexion for cleaner, clearer, softer-looking skin.
The Local: Corpa Flora All-Natural Quebec-Based
Suitable for all skin types (especially sensitive)
Not tested on animals 🙂
Corpa Flora is a brand I discovered last year at the National Women’s Show in Montreal. This small business is run by founder and formulator lady boss extraordinaire Celine Champigny, whose vision was to bring the natural elements back into the cleansing ritual. This line of products is free of water, meaning the concentration levels are high and you only need a small amount to be effective. This product can be used exclusively or as an additive to your existing favourite beauty products.
I also learned that the extraction process of oils impacts the longevity, therefore cold pressed super critical extraction means the oil can be used for upwards of two years.
The Blissful: Bliss Fabulous Makeup Melt
Suitable for all skin types.
IS tested on animals 🙁
This product does not look like oil, rather it comes out in gel form when squeezed from the tube, which makes the product less messy. Bliss Fabulous Makeup Melt removes makeup and impurities, and is infused with spa essential oils for “clean and balanced skin.” My only problem with this product is that it is in fact tested on animals, so for my own personal reasons, it’s not my number one choice.
So there you have it. 5 great options each for their own reasons, so if you are eager to mix things up a bit in the beauty section, oil cleansing is a great place to start.
